Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled received the Secretary-General of the Arab League, Nabil Fahmy, and the accompanying delegation on the occasion of his official visit to the country. The meeting discussed a number of issues of mutual interest and reviewed the latest developments in the Arab and regional arenas, while reaffirming the importance of enhancing joint Arab action to support security and stability in the region.

Crown Prince and Prime Minister Sheikh Ahmad Al-Abdullah also received Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy. During the meeting, the latest developments in the regional and international arenas were discussed, along with ways to enhance Arab solidarity and cooperation. His Highness expressed his best wishes for Fahmy’s success and progress in continuing the path of joint Arab action.

In a press conference held on the sidelines of his visit, Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy emphasized that the security of Kuwait and the Gulf Arab states constitutes an integral part of the Arab national security system. He stressed that the League would not remain silent in the face of any violation of international law that affects the sovereignty or interests of Arab states, and that it would continue its political and diplomatic initiatives to support the security and stability of member states.

Fahmy said that attacks on the territories, sovereignty, and interests of Gulf states, including Kuwait, particularly Iranian attacks, reflect the scale of the security and political challenges facing the region. He affirmed the Arab League’s readiness to provide various forms of political support and cooperation to help protect Kuwaiti interests and enhance regional stability.

Responding to a question about the guarantees the Arab League could offer to protect the sovereignty of member states, Fahmy clarified that the League and Arab states form an integrated system, in which states direct joint action while the Secretariat-General takes on the role of initiative, support, and political coordination. He noted that the available guarantees are not military or direct security measures, but rather involve activating political and diplomatic action, unifying Arab positions, and confronting any violation of international law that affects Arab interests.

He added, “I am concerned about the Arab situation and uneasy about it,” explaining that the multiplicity of crises and challenges facing Arab states, whether caused by regional actors or due to internal divisions, calls for a serious review of joint action mechanisms.

When asked about the possibility of establishing an Arab defense alliance similar to NATO, Fahmy said that the Arab region already has agreements for joint defense, but they need to be developed and activated to match the nature of current challenges. He clarified that his vision is based on building a comprehensive Arab deterrence system that is not limited to the military aspect, but also includes political deterrence and diplomatic action.
