Ann Carson Wins Nobel Prize in Literature

The Swedish Academy awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature to the Canadian writer and poet Anne Carson, who is also a translator, critic, and scholar of classical literature, “in recognition of her bold and innovative literary production, which has created new forms for contemporary literature by blending playful dialogue with classical heritage.” Carson’s writing style blends poetry, essays, literary criticism, and other forms of prose, and her approach is at once unique, innovative, and scholarly. The 76-year-old Carson is renowned for her translations and contemporary reworkings of ancient Greek texts. In her 1998 novel Antigonick, she transformed a passage of Greek poetry into a destructive love story about a moody teenager, while her 2013 novel The Red Document serves as a sequel to Antigonick. Carson has received numerous literary awards and was nominated for the 2024 National Book Award for Poetry for her collection The Beauty of the Husband, as well as for the PEN/Nabokov Award for Excellence in World Literature. Born in Toronto in 1950, Carson published her doctoral dissertation in classical studies in 1981, titled “I Hate, Therefore I Am.” Throughout her career, she has combined poetry writing, translation, and teaching at various universities. Most of her literary output focuses on the intersection of a linguistic obsession with words and her desire to find new meanings, with the etymology of words serving as the starting point for all her work. Prior to the Nobel, Carson had already won a number of literary awards and honors, including a MacArthur Fellowship, the Lannan Literary Award, and the Griffin Poetry Prize. In 2020, she received the Princess of Asturias Award for Literature, honoring a career built on blending diverse literary forms and references and combining classical heritage with contemporary literature. Her winning of the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature crowns this career, with the Nobel Committee highlighting the uniqueness of her literary experience by noting her ability to innovate new forms for contemporary literature in dialogue with classical heritage.
