Ignorance of the Law: Does It Excuse a Person?
The principle that “no one is excused for ignorance of the law” is an important rule that helps regulate society and ensure stability. If ignorance of the law were a valid excuse for everyone, it would become easy for anyone to violate the law and then plead lack of knowledge as a defense. Nevertheless, some individuals may find it difficult to keep up with the laws due to their sheer number and diversity. Therefore, it is essential for the competent authorities to disseminate, simplify, and raise public awareness about the laws. In my view, the application of this principle is most effective when accompanied by legal awareness that enables individuals to easily understand their rights and obligations. This way, we achieve a balance between respecting the law and fostering societal awareness of it.
