Damascus – Agencies: Muhammad al-Jaffal, the advisor for Afro-Asian affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, affirmed that Syria’s stance toward Iranian policy was not a transient political position, but rather the result of fourteen years of war, killing, displacement, and destruction, as well as Iran’s role in supporting the regime of ousted President Bashar al-Assad. In a statement reported by the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), al-Jaffal said that if Iran wishes to build a new relationship with Syria, it must respect Syria’s sovereignty and the will of its people, review its past policies, and build trust. He clarified that Iran’s support for the Assad regime at the expense of the Syrian people contributed to complicating the crisis and bringing further calamities upon Syrians, a fact that cannot be overlooked when discussing relations between the two countries.
