UAE tops the list; Qatar surpasses Bahrain

The UAE national team topped Group B of the 27th Arabian Gulf Cup after a commanding 4-0 victory over Yemen yesterday in the first round, which also saw Qatar defeat Bahrain 2-0. The UAE and Qatar are level on points, with the UAE holding the advantage on goal difference.

At Prince Abdullah Al-Faisal Stadium, the UAE asserted its dominance from the outset and ended the first half with a clean-sheet three-goal lead. Nicolas Gimenez opened the scoring in the 26th minute, before Nader Sahl added to the UAE's advantage with an own goal in the 36th minute. Luana Pereira then scored the third goal in the fourth minute of stoppage time.

The UAE maintained its superiority in the second half, with Gimenez scoring his second personal goal and the fourth for his team in the 51st minute. This secured the UAE's first three points of the tournament, while Yemen suffered its first defeat.

In the second match at Al-Inma Stadium, Qatar beat Bahrain with two goals scored in the second half. The first half was evenly matched and largely devoid of attacking threat, with only limited attempts from both sides. The pattern continued in the second half until the 62nd minute, when Akram Afif delivered a free kick that Jorge Falcão headed into the Bahraini net unopposed.

In the 70th minute, Qatar's Ahmed Fathi was sent off after receiving his second yellow card. Bahrain attempted to exploit the numerical disadvantage to equalize, but Qatar captain Hassan Al-Haidos broke away on a counter-attack and went one-on-one with the goalkeeper. Bahraini defender Abbas Al-Asfar committed a foul, resulting in a red card and a penalty for Qatar. Al-Haidos himself converted the penalty, adding the second goal in the eighth minute of stoppage time.

The second round will take place on Sunday, with the UAE facing Bahrain and Qatar playing Yemen.
