Taylor Swift will not need to wait for the envelopes to be opened to find out whether she will leave the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards with a new record. The honorary award she will receive at the ceremony will officially make her the most awarded artist in the history of the Video Music Awards. Swift currently shares the top spot with Beyoncé, with 30 awards each. However, receiving the inaugural “Artist-Director Honor” will raise her total to 31 awards, even before this year’s nine nominations are tallied. Thus, the record is not merely a possibility tied to voting, as initially suggested in early coverage, but a settled outcome announced by the organizers ahead of the event scheduled for Sunday, September 27, at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. MTV introduced the award to honor artists whose work behind the camera has helped develop the music video format and expand the possibilities of visual storytelling. Over the past years, Swift has gone beyond singing and appearing in her projects, taking on directing roles for several of her music videos and films. She has previously won awards for direction and video, and has become the first artist to win Video of the Year five times.
