US-China Summit to "Discuss Everything"

Beijing – Agencies: The Chinese Foreign Ministry confirmed yesterday that President Xi Jinping will pay a state visit to the United States from Wednesday to Friday, during which he will hold talks with U.S. President Donald Trump. The ministry said in a statement, “At the invitation of U.S. President Donald J. Trump, President Xi Jinping will make a state visit to the United States from September 23 to 25.” Trump will receive Xi at Joint Base Andrews on Wednesday before their scheduled meeting the following day. Chinese Vice President Wang Qishan had welcomed the U.S. president upon his arrival in Beijing for a state visit last May. Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday, “I will discuss almost everything with him.” For his part, ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang said the two leaders would engage in “an in-depth exchange of views on major issues concerning China-U.S. relations and global peace and development.” He added that China “will work with the United States to enrich the core of the constructive strategic stability relationship between China and the United States, enhance dialogue and cooperation, and properly manage differences.” Washington had announced that the leaders of the world’s two largest economies would meet this week, in an effort to ease tensions over trade, technology, and strategic issues. The U.S. war with Iran casts a shadow over bilateral relations, as Beijing seeks to avoid U.S. sanctions imposed on countries dealing with Tehran, amid reports that China supplied Iran with intelligence to carry out an attack on U.S. forces. Meanwhile, the ongoing trade war between the two countries remains a major concern, and warnings of a potential disaster caused by artificial intelligence weigh heavily on the upcoming meeting, as both nations race to achieve technological supremacy.
