The New Sports Law: What's Next?
The sports law, which the government has commendably approved, has been long-awaited by the sports community for years and is seen as the optimal solution to rescue our sports, which have lagged significantly at all levels. The new law establishes the correct foundations and standards to elevate Kuwaiti sports across all fronts. It addresses the challenges faced by clubs, starting with the nomination and election processes for club membership and general assembly members. We observe that some clubs are monopolized by specific groups, with certain individuals holding positions for decades before handing them over to close associates. This is due to the weak standards, foundations, and regulations governing the registration of general assembly members in clubs. The new law will also rectify the dysfunction in the operations of sports federations, whose board members are currently selected by the boards of the clubs.
The new sports law sets excellent standards and foundations for monitoring expenditures in sports clubs, whether in investments or in the financial support provided by the state. The state continues to spend hundreds of millions annually on clubs and federations, yet without achieving any positive results. The sports community is highly optimistic about the Minister of Sports and Youth, Dr. Tariq Al-Jalahma, given his extensive experience in the sports field, having been a former player, an academic, a specialist in sports science, and a sports analyst on Arab television channels. The question the sports community seeks an answer to is: when will this law see the light of day? When will it be enacted? Everyone believes it is timely to address the negative conditions our sports suffer from, both technically and administratively.
We thank the government for approving this sports law and extend our gratitude to those who contributed to its drafting. The state has not spared any effort in supporting our sports financially and morally; our clubs go on external training camps annually, as do our national teams, yet, unfortunately, without achieving any positive results. Young sports enthusiasts in Kuwait lament when comparing the level of our clubs and national teams to those of neighboring countries, as well as the level of our league across all sports. We urge the government to expedite the implementation of the sports law to save our sports. We all trust that the government prioritizes youth in all fields, including sports, and that the results will be beneficial for the state and the young sports community.
In conclusion, I pray to God to protect Kuwait, its Amir, and its people from all harm.
