Brentford Defeats Chelsea with a 'Hat-Trick'

Chelsea continued to expose their defensive fragility, suffering their second defeat of the Premier League season as they fell to a 3-0 loss against hosts Brentford on Tuesday in Matchday 5. Brentford maintained their unbeaten record after five matches, boosting their tally to nine points and temporarily moving into third place (two wins and three draws), while Chelsea’s points total remained at seven, leaving them temporarily in seventh place. After starting the season optimally with two consecutive victories, the team managed by Spanish coach Xabi Alonso now finds itself in a difficult position following two defeats and a draw in their last three matches. Alonso has been unable to address the defensive problems he inherited upon taking charge this summer; Chelsea’s last clean sheet in the league dates back to January 17, 2026, and that match was also against Brentford. At the G-Tech Community Stadium, Chelsea’s backline offered a relatively reassuring performance before halftime, but collapsed after the break, conceding three goals. The first came from a set-piece, highlighting one of the London side’s weaknesses, followed by a counter-attack goal, and the third arrived after a long throw-in.
