Washington, Agencies: The U.S. House of Representatives rejected on Tuesday a Democratic effort to initiate impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump, citing his administration’s stringent policies on deporting migrants. The chamber voted 232 to 147 to close the resolution introduced by Democratic Representative Al Green, while 47 members, including prominent Democratic leaders, abstained.
Green accused Trump of abusing his powers through a broad campaign to pursue and deport undocumented immigrants, which he said resulted in the deaths of several civilians earlier this year. Green stated that immigration enforcement actions had transformed U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) into “quasi-military” forces operating without adequate oversight, and that Trump’s actions amounted to impeachable offenses. However, Democratic leaders declined to support the resolution, noting that it was introduced without formal investigations or hearings to examine the allegations.
With the midterm elections in November approaching, Democrats are also focusing on economic issues and rising living costs. Trump has repeatedly predicted his own impeachment if Democrats win the November midterms and gain control of Congress. Trump is the first U.S. president in history to face impeachment proceedings twice—first in 2019 and again in 2021—both of which were rejected by the Senate.
Meanwhile, the House of Representatives approved on Tuesday a resolution directing President Donald Trump to halt hostilities with Iran and withdraw U.S. forces from the region. This marks the third time the House has passed such a resolution, though it is symbolic and non-binding on the president, requiring no signature; it must only be approved by the Senate. The House passed the resolution, introduced by Democratic Representative Seth Moulton regarding war powers, by a vote of 220 to 204, after seven Republicans joined Democrats in support of the measure: Representatives Thomas Massie, Brian Fitzpatrick, Warren Davidson, Tom Barrett, Nancy Mace, Zach Nunn, and Mariannette Miller-Meeks, who voted against their party’s line.
