Washington – Agencies: The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump plans to send weapons worth $2.8 billion to Israel, in a proposed deal that includes 40,000 bombs, each weighing 2,000 pounds (approximately 907 kilograms), according to The Washington Post and Reuters, citing U.S. officials. The deal, according to a U.S. official familiar with the matter, includes 20,000 MK-84 bombs, known as the “Hammer,” 20,000 BLU-117 bombs, and 20,000 bunker-buster warheads of the GBU-28 type. If approved, the deal would be larger than previous transfers of 2,000-pound bombs to Israel during the administrations of Joe Biden and Donald Trump, and would surpass a controversial $2.04 billion arms deal approved in 2025 that bypassed standard congressional review procedures. The MK-84 is considered one of the most destructive conventional munitions in the Western military arsenal, capable of hurling metal shrapnel over distances of up to thousands of feet, as well as penetrating concrete and thick metal and creating large craters. U.S. pilots refer to the MK-84 as the “Hammer.” The Israeli occupation army has widely used 2,000-pound bombs in its genocidal war on Gaza and in Lebanon, drawing criticism from human rights experts over the massive civilian casualties. Brian Fishman, senior advisor at the International Crisis Group, said there are “real concerns” about how these weapons will be used in densely populated areas, given Israel’s conduct during its war in Gaza and in southern Lebanon. U.S. commentator Tucker Carlson remarked that “this shipment equals more than three times the destructive power of the nuclear explosion that destroyed Hiroshima. There is no precedent for what the Trump administration is doing... It is a gift funded by American taxpayers through the Foreign Military Financing program, with Congress appropriating the funds and the executive branch transferring them to Israel to purchase U.S.-made weapons.” He added, “What Netanyahu’s government has done in Gaza is genocide... It has killed and wounded a quarter of a million Palestinians, and the 40,000 new bombs will be used to do the same in Lebanon, and possibly in other countries in the region.”
