Washington – Agencies: US Vice President JD Vance said the conflict with Iran will enter a “completely different phase” within two months, noting that the next stage will focus on preventing Tehran from rebuilding its capabilities and maintaining as much stability as possible. In an interview with the New York Post, Vance explained that the first phase of the conflict ended with the destruction of Iran’s nuclear program and military, as well as Tehran’s ability to project influence, while the second phase involves ensuring that Iran cannot rebuild these capabilities. He added that Iranians “fire occasionally” at commercial vessels but usually fail to hit them, and stated that the Iranian regime will continue to lose control of the Strait of Hormuz until the date of the US midterm elections. Vance affirmed that President Donald Trump, as Commander-in-Chief, is responsible for determining when conflicts begin and end.
Meanwhile, US Republican Congressman Thomas Massie introduced articles of impeachment against Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth yesterday, accusing him of abusing his office by executing an order to launch combat operations against Iran without congressional approval. The impeachment resolution is unlikely to be approved, but the move by the Kentucky Republican could force a vote in the House of Representatives, posing difficulties for some Republican colleagues who are preparing to leave Washington ahead of the midterm elections scheduled for November. Pentagon spokesperson Kingsley Wilson said in a statement sent via email: “The entire Department stands united behind the Secretary’s vision and will continue to work to put our fighters and America’s interests first.”
Massie designated the articles of impeachment against Hegseth as a priority, meaning the House must consider them within two days of legislative action. Massie, a vocal critic of the war on Iran and aid to Israel, will not seek re-election. He lost the May primary to a Trump-backed candidate, having angered the president by leading a campaign to uncover files from the Department of Justice linked to the late businessman Jeffrey Epstein, who was convicted of sex crimes.
