Inter secured another comeback at home, overturning a two-goal deficit against Udinese for a thrilling 5-3 victory in the final match of Serie A’s fourth round. The result leaves Inter level on points with league leaders Roma, who had earlier defeated hosts Torino 2-0, ahead of their upcoming high-stakes clash.
Following their win over Torino, Roma, who have not started a Serie A season with four consecutive victories since 2014, moved to the top of the table with 12 points, edging out title-holding Inter on goal difference.
Inter had previously staged a comeback in Serie A, turning a two-goal deficit against visiting Napoli into a 3-2 win, and now replicated the feat but as the home side.
At the Giuseppe Meazza, Udinese stunned Inter with a fiery start, taking a 2-0 lead through goals from Irishman James Tavernier (9th minute) and Dutchman Jurgen Ekkelenkamp (16th). However, Inter responded with a five-goal barrage: Brazilian Carlos Augusto (26th), Nicolo Barella (35th), Frenchman Marcus Thuram (57th), Francesco Brio Esposito (67th), and Ivorian Jean-Yves Mboumbouni (79th). Senegalese midfielder Idrissa Gueye pulled one back for the visitors in stoppage time (90+1).
Inter, managed by Romanian coach Cristian Chivu, suffered an early blow when English center-back John Stones was forced off due to injury.
Udinese’s inconsistent start continued, leaving them with just four points in 13th place.
Hours before Inter’s victory, Roma secured a crucial win thanks to outstanding Dutch striker Donyell Malen, who opened the scoring in the 40th minute. Young midfielder Nicolò Barella sealed the win with a late goal in the 90+3rd minute.
The first half saw Roma miss several chances before Malen’s goal gave them the lead, raising his Serie A tally to six goals this season. Roma dominated the early stages of the second half, but their momentum waned after coach Gian Piero Gasperini substituted Malen and Argentine star Paulo Dybala. Barella, the 21-year-old midfielder, then ended the contest in the third minute of stoppage time.
The victory restored Roma’s confidence following a 1-1 draw with Turkish club Fenerbahçe in their opening match of the new unified group stage of the UEFA Champions League.
Meanwhile, Torino’s points total remained at three after their third loss of the season, leaving them in 14th place. Their only win came from a 2-1 away victory over Fiorentina in the previous round.
At the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia in Como, last season’s surprise package continued their impressive form with a 2-1 win over visiting Parma. Como moved up to third place, level on points with fourth-placed Lazio but ahead on goal difference, after accumulating 10 points.
Managed by Spanish coach Cesc Fàbregas, Como secured the victory with goals from Spanish striker Jacopo Ramon (23rd) and Brazilian defender Caiky Bruno (83rd). Argentine forward José David Romero scored a late consolation for Parma in the 90+2nd minute.
