Opinion Window: Articles contributed by readers who follow the page, as well as specialists and those interested in issues concerning the care, service, and rehabilitation of the elderly. This week’s article: In order to promote and enhance health and sports culture among the elderly community and their caregivers in particular, and among civil society members and institutions in general, the Kuwaiti Charitable Association for the Care and Rehabilitation of the Elderly is committed to this goal. This effort reaffirms one of the Association’s objectives: raising awareness among the elderly and their families about the elderly care services provided by the Ministry of Social Affairs and other institutions and ministries, and educating them about the Social Care Law for the Elderly. It also aims to raise awareness among the elderly, their families, and society about the characteristics of aging and the changes that occur in the elderly as a result of aging, as well as how to help overcome their problems. A series of awareness articles will be published in the field of sports activities for the health and fitness of seniors over the age of 50, authored by Dr. Mustafa Jawhar Hayyat, Head of the Kuwaiti Committee for Walking Enthusiasts, which is affiliated with the Kuwait Olympic Committee. Today, we begin by publishing the first article. Part One: Health and Fitness The book “Sports Activity for the Health and Fitness of Seniors Over Fifty” differs from other health awareness books and publications. It contains four essential sports programs for humans at all life stages, especially for seniors (forty and above) as well as those suffering from chronic diseases and other health problems. The most important of these programs are regular physical fitness exercises for seniors (over forty), a walking program, a relaxation and rest program, and a water and oxygen program. This book was specifically designed for a large segment of people who have passed this age, most of whom have retired from work, both men and women. As time passes and retirement approaches, maintaining physical and health fitness becomes essential to enjoy the extra time gained. Scientists emphasize that retirement is a time of rest and relaxation, free from stress, psychological and physical pressures, and work-related pressures. However, it is a mistake for retirees to take this lightly as the body develops and grows; there is no reason why a retiree cannot be as healthy and fit after retirement as they were before, or even more so. There is no need to follow an intense training regimen such as jogging, games, and other activities. Certainly, a regular, light, and easy-to-perform exercise program not only maintains physical fitness and general health but also promotes feelings of happiness, vitality, and bodily pride, regardless of advanced age. The period between the ages of forty and fifty is when people are currently exposed to chronic diseases, especially obesity (belly fat), diabetes, high blood pressure, cholesterol, heart diseases, and cancer. As people age, the efficiency and function of vital body systems decline, particularly the gradual loss of a significant amount of muscle mass. Physical fitness elements diminish, including muscle strength and endurance, leading to weakness, pain, and stiffness in bones and joints. This requires individuals to maintain and strengthen strength, resilience, and fitness by practicing daily sports, especially strength, endurance, and flexibility exercises, alongside maintaining the health of the heart and blood vessels (circulatory system), lungs (oxygen), liver and kidneys (water), and all glands (hormones). Finally, it is necessary to avoid bad habits such as smoking, alcohol, drugs, addiction, poor diet, lethargy, and laziness, and to adopt healthy nutrition appropriate for age, health status, and physical fitness.
