Oil prices break the $100 barrier amid 'escalation'

Oil prices jumped back above the $100-per-barrel mark, a direct reflection of renewed military escalation in the region and the widening confrontation between the United States and Iran, amid growing fears that the conflict could evolve from a military clash into a protracted crisis disrupting global energy, transport, and supply chains. Brent crude surpassed the $100 level for the first time since July 24, rising more than 2% in yesterday’s trading, while US crude climbed about 1.7% to $94.59 per barrel. Brent has thus gained nearly 25% since the beginning of August, signaling that geopolitical risks have returned with force to the energy market. The latest surge came as Iran launched additional attacks on US military facilities in the Gulf region, coinciding with mounting concerns over the safety of navigation and oil infrastructure, which revived scenarios of supply disruptions or higher transportation and security costs. The repercussions of the escalation are not confined to crude prices; any direct targeting of oil infrastructure in the region could further elevate risk premiums, particularly given that the Gulf remains one of the world’s most important centers for energy production and export.
