August: The Month of Art Theft in Europe!

Last August witnessed four major thefts, the latest being a swift and targeted heist that lasted only four minutes, which took place at the Vilanova Archaeological Museum in Spain, after thieves managed to loot pieces of a historical gold treasure dating back to the Bronze Age, estimated to be worth millions of dollars in historical and artistic value. In the middle of the same month, four works by the Italian artist Antonello da Messina, one of the most prominent artists of the Italian Renaissance, were stolen from the Regional Museum in the city of Messina in Sicily, with the stolen items including parts of a work of art from the 15th century. This incident comes months after the Italian state acquired another painting by Antonello da Messina titled “Ecce Homo” at a public auction in New York for approximately $15 million. This was not the only incident that preoccupied Italian authorities; days earlier, they announced the recovery of three paintings by prominent French artists Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Paul Cézanne, and Henri Matisse, after they were stolen from a museum near the city of Parma, with the total value of these works exceeding 9 million euros, including paintings such as “The Fish,” “Still Life with Cherries,” and “Courtesan on the Balcony.” The thefts extended to historical jewelry, the most notable being the theft of royal jewels worth approximately 88 million euros from the Louvre Museum last October. The loot reached an Austrian museum in the capital Vienna, where a rare diamond necklace weighing more than 200 carats was stolen. This is the necklace worn by Queen Nazli in 1939 during the wedding of her daughter, Princess Faiza, and is considered one of the most prominent pieces associated with the history of Egypt’s former royal family.
