Doctors Without Borders: Sudan's Health System on the Brink of Collapse

Khartoum – Agencies: The organization Doctors Without Borders said that Sudan’s health system is on the verge of collapse, as clinics and outpatient care centers are forced to close across the war-torn country due to cuts in aid funding. The organization appealed to world leaders attending the United Nations General Assembly meetings to secure the necessary funding to provide basic healthcare, noting that the UN’s humanitarian plan for Sudan, valued at $2.87 billion, has received only 41 percent of the required funding. Mohamed Ibrahim, the organization’s coordinator in Sudan, said that the war is driving up humanitarian needs in the country, while funding cuts are limiting the scale of aid that can be delivered. Ibrahim added that the organization’s activities rely on private funding, but warned that the cessation of funding for other health services is leading to clinic closures, depriving patients of additional places to receive healthcare and increasing pressure on health facilities that remain operational, including those run by the organization.
