"State Security Court Resumes: Two Final Sentences Imprisoning Mohammed Al-Mutair for 8 Years"

The Court of Appeal’s State Security Division, presided over by Senior Judge Abdullah Al-Sanea and with Judges Mohammed Jaffar and Hamoud Al-Badr as members, sentenced former Member of Parliament Mohammed Al-Mutairi to eight years in prison in two state security cases: “Publicly challenging the rights of His Highness the Amir” and “Insulting the judiciary and the Public Prosecution, and broadcasting false news.” In the first case, the court issued a three-year imprisonment sentence for Al-Mutairi, upholding the conviction for broadcasting false news on the X platform, insulting the Attorney General, publishing confidential documents related to a case, and casting doubt on the integrity of judges and members of the Public Prosecution. In the second case, the court sentenced him to five years in prison for publicly challenging, through speech, the rights and authority of His Highness the Amir, insulting the Amir, encroaching upon the emirate’s prerogatives, attributing statements to His Highness the Amir without obtaining specific written authorization from the Diwan Al-Amiri, insulting the President of the Supreme Council of the Judiciary, judges, and members of the Public Prosecution, and casting doubt on their integrity. Additionally, he was found guilty of intentionally attempting to persuade judges of the Constitutional Court to take measures likely to result in a ruling favorable to him in a lawsuit pending before the court, during a seminar he held at his diwan in April 2023.
