Kane leads Bayern to Cup victory

English striker Harry Kane helped Bayern Munich overturn a one-goal deficit to defeat second-division side Osnabrück 4-1 on Tuesday night, opening their campaign to defend their DFB-Pokal title. Kane scored a brace in the 18th and 86th minutes from penalty kicks, while Thomas Brühl (24th minute) and French forward Michael Olise (73rd minute) added the other goals for the Bavarian club, which responded strongly after falling early to a stunning strike from home team player Robin Meißner (5th minute). The England captain extended his tally to 148 goals in 150 appearances across all competitions for Bayern Munich, which he joined from his former club Tottenham in 2023. Meißner gave the home side hope of a stunning upset when he opened the scoring just five minutes in with a beautiful falling shot from outside the penalty area, but Bayern, winners of the DFB-Pokal 21 times, the most recent being last season against Stuttgart, quickly equalized when Kane finished off a rebound. Bayern’s last first-round exit in the competition dates back to 1994. Brühl added a second goal in a similar fashion six minutes later, putting Bayern in a comfortable position, before Olise scored in the 73rd minute, and Kane converted a penalty four minutes from time to seal his team’s victory. Earlier on Tuesday, Borussia Dortmund defeated fifth-division amateur side HEP 5-0 in Hamburg.
