Chatbots Enter the Inner Chambers and Listen to Emotions

Chatbots are no longer just digital tools we turn to for finding information or completing tasks. Some adults have begun using them in a completely different way: to discuss their problems, talk about their relationships, express their feelings, and even seek companionship and emotional support. As artificial intelligence has advanced, enabling smoother and more responsive conversations, the boundary between “tool” and “digital companion” has become increasingly blurred, giving rise to a new social phenomenon that warrants closer attention from researchers. A study published in August 2026 in the journal Nature Human Behaviour found that some users of AI chatbots have formed relationships with them that resemble companionship. The study included 1,131 American adults who used the Character.AI platform, along with an analysis of 4,664 conversation sessions comprising more than 464,000 messages. Researchers found that individuals with smaller real-world social networks were more likely to use chatbots in search of companionship. Moreover, companionship-driven use was associated with lower levels of psychological well-being, particularly when conversations became more intensive and involved a high degree of personal disclosure. However, the study does not provide evidence that chatbots directly cause declines in mental health; the observed outcomes may instead be influenced by users’ preexisting social and psychological circumstances and by how they engage with the technology.
