Peru Severs Diplomatic Relations with Iran

Peru announced the severing of its diplomatic relations with Iran, accusing Tehran of contributing to the escalation of conflicts in the Middle East and obstructing navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. The Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement yesterday that the Lima government made its decision based on what it described as the country’s historic stance in support of peace. It added that “Peru is deeply concerned by the strict restrictions imposed by the Iranian regime, as well as by the obstruction of international trade through the Strait of Hormuz,” and also expressed regret over the “deterioration of democracy” in the Islamic Republic.
