Syria ends 14-year diplomatic absence in Libya

Tripoli – Agencies: Syrian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Asaad al-Shaybani reopened his country’s embassy in the Libyan capital, Tripoli, after a closure lasting more than 14 years, in a move carrying diplomatic and political dimensions that extend beyond the resumption of consular activities, and reflecting a Syrian trend toward rebuilding its network of Arab and regional relations and strengthening Damascus’s official presence in the region. The reopening ceremony was attended by a number of Arab and foreign officials and diplomats, according to the Syrian official news agency (SANA), in an event underscoring the significance of the step for the trajectory of relations between Damascus and Tripoli, following years of absence of direct Syrian diplomatic representation in the Libyan capital. The reopening of the embassy cannot be separated from the transformations that Syria and the region have undergone in recent years, as Damascus works to rebuild its external relations and expand communication channels with Arab capitals, after a prolonged period marked by political isolation and a decline in Syrian diplomatic representation in several countries. Tripoli appears to be an important stop for Damascus, not only because of Libya’s location in North Africa and the Mediterranean, but also given the presence of a Syrian community in the country and its need for direct consular services related to documents, official transactions, residency, and other daily affairs.
