Gonzalez: Happy to join Newcastle

Spanish midfielder Nico González said he could not wait to join Newcastle United’s “project” after his move from English Premier League rivals Manchester City. The 24-year-old midfielder signed a long-term contract, as announced by Newcastle yesterday, in a deal reportedly worth up to £52 million ($71 million), according to British media reports.

González told the club’s website: “I am very happy to be at this wonderful club. I have only heard positive things about the club and the city, so I am extremely excited to live here and be part of this project.” He added, “I already love the black-and-white shirt, and I can’t wait to wear it on the pitch with this club.”

He continued, “I played two matches at St James’ Park when I was with Manchester City, and it was very difficult. The atmosphere was amazing and the passion was immense.” He added, “I can’t wait to experience it as a home player.”

The former Spain U21 international began his career at La Liga champions Barcelona, before a loan spell at Valencia, and then moved to Portuguese club Porto in 2023. González joined City at the end of the January 2025 transfer window for around £50 million, and subsequently made approximately 60 appearances for the team.

Newcastle’s new German manager, Matthias Jaissle, said: “I am very happy to see Nico become a Newcastle United player.” He added, “He brings great quality and top-level experience in a key area of the pitch.”
