Artificial Intelligence Redraws the Map of Inequality
Owning a smartphone or having internet access is no longer enough to step into the future. A new ladder has appeared on the path, its rungs made of knowledge, skills, and the ability to turn artificial intelligence into opportunity. The paradox is that a tool seemingly available to all does not deliver the same value to everyone. Recent studies reveal that generative AI users tend to be younger and more educated, with usage more prevalent among those with higher incomes, professions, and skill levels. In low-income countries, AI presence remains marginal compared to more advanced nations. The scene resembles a city that has opened its gates to a new highway: there are many cars, but some have more powerful engines, more experienced drivers, and better maps. This is where the AI divide takes shape. It begins with access, moves to the ability to use the technology, and culminates at the most critical point: who can transform the tool into value? A student using AI to understand a complex subject adds to their knowledge capital. A young person leveraging it to study a market or develop a business idea moves closer to an economic opportunity. An employee who optimizes its use saves time and boosts productivity. In contrast, another person may reach the same tool, yet it remains for them merely a space for quick searches or entertainment. Thus, technology may become faster at rewarding those who already possess better education, skills, and income. AI could shift from being a tool that narrows gaps to one that widens them. The greatest risk falls on the least advantaged groups: resource-constrained youth, workers exposed to labor market shifts, students whose environments lack educational support, and communities distant from knowledge and economic hubs. These groups need more than just devices and connectivity; they need the capacity to use technology productively. Hence, the concept of digital equity must change. Investment in infrastructure remains essential, but the real battle has shifted to building the ability to benefit: teaching AI skills, retraining workers, empowering youth, supporting small enterprises, and providing safe, low-cost tools for the most vulnerable. AI does not automatically redistribute opportunities. It amplifies the capacity of those who know how to use it. In the coming years, the decisive difference may not be between those who have technology and those who do not, but between those who can make AI work to their advantage and those who merely watch it operate in the world around them. This is the new map of inequality; a map not drawn by distance from technology, but by the gap between using it and the ability to transform it into a future.
