Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Sheikh Fahad Al-Yousif announced the disruption of the largest drug seizure in Kuwait’s history, involving approximately five tons of raw Lyrica powder and nearly four million ready-to-sell capsules, with an estimated total market value of around 150 million Kuwaiti dinars, equivalent to approximately $485.9 million. This announcement came during a speech delivered by Al-Yousif while presiding over and attending the closing ceremony of the comprehensive national media awareness campaign on drug prevention, “A Nation That Protects You,” organized by the Ministry of Social Affairs and Solidarity in collaboration with various government, civil society, and private entities.
Al-Yousif stated that the seizure, which took place on Tuesday, also included a fully integrated factory for producing the psychoactive substance Lyrica, along with equipment for filling and packaging capsules. He emphasized that this operation reflects the scale of the threat thwarted by the vigilance of anti-narcotics officers and the security efforts undertaken to combat this scourge. He affirmed that the achievements made by the Ministry of Interior’s personnel in confronting drug abuse are due to the unwavering support and diligent follow-up of His Highness the Amir of Kuwait, Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah. He stressed that His Highness’s continuous support and constant encouragement serve as a motivation for ministry staff to redouble their efforts and fulfill their duty to protect the nation and safeguard its security and stability.
The Deputy Prime Minister further confirmed that the new Drugs Law has contributed to strengthening deterrence, instilling fear among drug traffickers and making them think twice before attempting to harm any citizen or resident on Kuwaiti soil. Al-Yousif clarified that the fight against drugs is not limited to seizing narcotics and pursuing smugglers and distributors, but also encompasses treatment and rehabilitation as essential components. He stressed that individuals who fall into addiction require a genuine opportunity to return to their lives, families, and communities.
He noted that a fully equipped wing dedicated to treating and rehabilitating female addicts has been established, representing one of the most advanced facilities providing care through modern therapeutic and rehabilitative methods. Meanwhile, other comprehensive and specialized sites for treating and rehabilitating male addicts are currently being prepared to enhance the treatment system and expand its capacity to accommodate more cases. He explained that the objective extends beyond preventing drugs from reaching members of society; it also includes rescuing those who have fallen victim to addiction and helping them recover and reintegrate into society as healthy, productive individuals.
Sheikh Fahad Al-Yousif urged parents to take the initiative and not hesitate to seek help and treatment when needed, pointing out that the state has provided treatment pathways that guarantee confidentiality and privacy. He added that, in accordance with legal procedures and regulations, applying for treatment does not result in a criminal record for the user. He described the campaign as more than just an awareness activity; it was a sincere national message emphasizing that Kuwaiti citizens are a trust and their protection is everyone’s responsibility. He highlighted that the danger of drugs does not affect only individuals but threatens families, society, and the nation’s future.
Details of the Largest Seizure
The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, Sheikh Fahad Al-Yousif, stated that the quantity seized in the largest drug operation in the country’s history was ready for marketing, but the suspect refrained from distributing it out of fear of falling under the provisions of the new law. He added that full details of the seizure would be announced at 9 p.m. yesterday, noting that the success was achieved by the grace of God Almighty, followed by the government’s efforts and the issuance of the new law, which strengthened the anti-drug system and deterred traffickers.
Confidential Addiction Treatment
Al-Yousif affirmed that Kuwait, through its various government institutions and the private sector, is working as a unified team to eradicate the drug scourge, noting that specialized sites for treating and rehabilitating addicts are being established and equipped. He clarified that addiction treatment is conducted with complete confidentiality, without disclosing the names of those seeking treatment or filing cases against them, urging families to cooperate with relevant authorities and not hesitate to seek help to protect their children.
Amiri Pardon for Recovered Addicts
Al-Yousif pointed out that addiction is a disease like any other, requiring treatment that involves the coordinated roles of the Ministries of Interior, Justice, and Health. He explained that inmates in correctional facilities who are users also undergo treatment and rehabilitation programs within prisons. The Deputy Prime Minister stated that those among them who prove their recovery from this scourge may be eligible for a gracious Amiri pardon before the completion of their prison sentence, provided their recovery is verified.
Media and Statelessness Laws – Everything in Due Time
Regarding the issuance dates of the new Media Law and the law addressing illegal residents, Al-Yousif confirmed that the laws currently being drafted will be announced immediately upon completion and preparation for issuance. He stressed that preparing, approving, and publishing laws is not a rapid process. “Everything happens in its own time,” he said, adding that the laws being prepared will be announced when ready.
