Iranian Cyberattack Disables Power Plant in Britain

London – Agencies: The British Telegraph newspaper revealed that Iran disabled a power plant in Britain for four days in an unprecedented cyberattack. According to the newspaper, this is the first time Iranian hackers have succeeded in disrupting such a facility in Britain, and it is believed to be the most successful cyberattack of its kind. The newspaper noted that the incident coincided with a series of attacks on water infrastructure in the United States last month, which affected 12 states and raised concerns at the White House. It added that British officials declined to identify the affected power plant, citing security reasons. The newspaper indicated that the damaged plant was relatively small, and the power outage did not affect the overall supply or generation of electricity in Britain. It linked the attack to similar cyberattacks on dozens of wastewater treatment plants in the United States, which caused flooding and reduced water pressure at taps, prompting some authorities to advise consumers to boil water before drinking it. According to the newspaper, the first reports of these attacks emerged in the US state of Minnesota on July 26, followed by a series of similar security breaches in Michigan, Georgia, South Dakota, and New Jersey. Reports also emerged of attacks suspected to be the work of Iran in Germany, Poland, Finland, Belgium, and Albania.
