Trump threatens Iran with an “economic Normandy”

Washington – Agencies: U.S. President Donald Trump announced the launch of an economic war and the imposition of an unprecedented isolation on Iran, warning any country that engages in trade with it of severe repercussions. Tehran viewed this as an attempt to divert attention from what it described as America’s internal crisis. (See page 12.)

Trump wrote yesterday on his Truth Social platform that any country allowing its financial institutions, companies, airports, and government agencies to provide any form of lifeline to Iran would face severe economic consequences, noting that Iran would be subjected to the most crushing economic operation ever taken against any country.

Trump likened these measures to an economic D-Day, akin to the Normandy landings during World War II, warning that these historic actions would paralyze Iran’s movements and eliminate its capacity to spread terrorism worldwide. He added that smuggling of oil, currency exchanges, liquidity transfers, exchange offices, ship registries, and shell companies must all stop now, emphasizing that the United States needs all its allies to stand by it in isolating and defeating the Iranian threat.

In response, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Trump is seeking to distract attention from America’s own crisis: unprecedented debt and rising interest costs. He added that clinging to failed policies would bring only further defeat and hostility from Iranians.

Recently, Washington hinted that it would focus on economic pressure on the Islamic Republic rather than resuming military strikes, in a conflict approaching its sixth month.
