Europe's wildfires approach cities and tourist areas

European countries are battling a widespread wave of wildfires that have forced thousands of residents and tourists to flee threatened areas, with drought and heatwaves exacerbating the difficulty of containing the blazes. In Belgium, fires in the Haasdonk nature reserve in the east spread to approximately 3,000 hectares, becoming the largest forest fire in the country’s history, according to the latest figures reported by Reuters. Initial estimates indicated that around 1,600 hectares had burned, before the area increased to 2,700 and then 3,000 hectares as the fires continued to spread. About 600 people were evacuated from areas surrounding the reserve, while more than 250 firefighters and emergency personnel participated in containing the blaze, supported by the Belgian military and teams and equipment arriving from neighboring countries. The fires advanced toward the German border, but authorities stated that the protective perimeter around evacuated villages remains intact and that the fire is not expected to cross the border, despite warnings issued to residents near the German town of Monschau due to smoke. In the western German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, firefighters managed to contain the Hürtgen Forest fire, which authorities described as the largest in the state’s history. The flames spread over an area exceeding 300 hectares and came within approximately 300 meters of the village of Geilenkirchen, prompting the evacuation of more than 2,000 people. The fires were not limited to forests and rural areas; they reached populated areas and tourist destinations in France, Croatia, and Greece during the peak of the holiday season. In the Chalkidiki region of northern Greece, rapidly spreading fires forced more than 300 people, including residents and tourists, to flee the Seviri resort by boat after flames reached homes and tourist apartments. Croatia also faced wildfires near the Dalmatian coast and the tourist area of Omiš, leading to road closures and the evacuation of residents and visitors. On the Greek island of Salamina near Athens, two people died and more than 500 were evacuated as the fires advanced toward populated areas. France also witnessed new fires in the Landes region, following previous waves that caused widespread damage to forested and tourist areas.
