Smart Glove Restores Movement for Paralysis Patients

Researchers at the University of Munich have developed a soft robotic glove that can help paralyzed individuals regain the ability to move their hands and grasp objects, using a technology that senses the user’s intent and translates it into movement in real time. The innovation combines engineering, medicine, and machine learning, aiming to address one of the most significant challenges in assistive technologies: restoring hand function for daily activities. The new device relies on a soft exoskeleton made of fabric, designed to support hand movement while ensuring user comfort. The exterior of the glove features air cushions connected by 13 thin tubes, which inflate and deflate according to the desired motion. The design allows each finger to move independently, both in flexion and extension, as well as assisting with wrist rotation, enabling users to grasp objects of various shapes and sizes.
