Eclipse of the Century Obscures the Sun over Europe

Widespread areas of the Northern Hemisphere witnessed a rare solar eclipse, an exceptional astronomical phenomenon whose path of totality crossed regions of the Arctic, Greenland, Iceland, and the northern Atlantic Ocean, reaching southwestern Europe, while a partial eclipse was visible across broader areas of Europe, North America, and western Africa. The phenomenon holds particular significance for Europe, marking the first time in 27 years that the continent has experienced a total solar eclipse. This astronomical spectacle will not recur in the same region for decades, drawing millions of tourists along its path.
In Brussels, daylight did not turn completely dark, as the city lay outside the path of totality; instead, it experienced a partial eclipse during which the Moon covered approximately 89% of the Sun’s disk, leaving a portion of the solar disk illuminated. The rarity of the scene was heightened by the fact that the eclipse occurred when the Sun was close to the horizon, at an altitude of about 8 degrees, making it a striking phenomenon as daylight neared its end. A similar phenomenon was observed in the region in 1999 and will not recur in the same manner for approximately 55 years, making the observation of this eclipse a rare event for current generations.
On the other side of the Mediterranean, the eclipse was present in the skies of Morocco, albeit partially. In the capital, Rabat, Moroccans and foreign tourists gathered along the corniche to observe and document the phenomenon using phones and cameras. The partial eclipse in Rabat reached approximately 88%, with the percentage increasing as one moved northward toward Moroccan cities closer to Europe, reaching about 93% in Nador, Tetouan, and Tangier. Along the corniche stretching from Rabat toward Harhoura, citizens and visitors flocked to witness the moment, with children showing particular enthusiasm for recording the scene and turning it into a photographic memory of a phenomenon that will not soon recur.
The phenomenon also attracted widespread attention on social media and Moroccan media outlets, where users shared images and videos alongside comments encouraging reflection on the astronomical event and its cosmic implications. This celestial phenomenon was not the only one to capture attention; the sky is also expected to experience meteor showers as Earth passes through the orbit of Comet Swift-Tuttle. These meteors occur when dust particles left by the comet enter Earth’s atmosphere at tremendous speeds, frictioning with the atmosphere and burning up, appearing in the sky as rapid flashes of light. Thus, the sky of the Northern Hemisphere combined two striking astronomical phenomena.
