Who will succeed Rafa Benitez as Newcastle manager?

English club Newcastle United announced yesterday the appointment of German coach Matthias Jaissle as the team’s new manager, succeeding Eddie Howe, who departed the role. Jaissle, 38, a former German international who played for the under-21 national team, previously managed Saudi club Al Ahli, leading them to win the AFC Champions League Elite title in consecutive seasons in 2025 and 2026, as well as the 2025 Saudi Super Cup.

Jaissle said, “It is a great honor to become Newcastle United’s manager. This is one of the largest clubs in European football, with a rich history, a distinct identity, and a unique fanbase, and I am excited to experience this passion and connection up close.” He added, “When an offer comes from Newcastle United, you stop and take notice. The club’s ambition, its vision for the future, and the opportunity available are all factors that made this place extremely appealing to me. I have closely followed the club’s progress in recent years, and the progress it has made is evident to everyone.”

Jaissle was forced to end his playing career due to injury at the age of 25. His first managerial experience came with Austrian club Liefering, where he led them to second place in the second division, matching the club’s best-ever achievement. In 2021, he took charge of Red Bull Salzburg, guiding them to back-to-back Austrian Bundesliga titles and the Austrian Cup. He joined Al Ahli Saudi Club in 2023, leading them to win the AFC Champions League in 2025 and 2026, as well as the 2025 Saudi Super Cup.
