"Cultural Summer 18" Kicks Off with "Samer with Al-Amari"
The National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters launched the events of the 18th edition of the “Summer Cultural” festival at the Drama Theatre in the Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Cultural Centre, under the patronage of the Minister of State for Communications and Information Technology Affairs and Acting Minister of Media and Culture, and Chairman of the Council, Omar Al-Omar.
The opening ceremony began with the national anthem, followed by a welcome speech by the event’s host, Iman Al-Bazzaz. Then, Dr. Mohammed Al-Jassar, Secretary-General of the National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters, delivered a speech on behalf of the patron, welcoming attendees and emphasizing that this edition marks the Council’s first major cultural festival and public event following the exceptional circumstances the country has recently experienced.
Al-Jassar stressed in his address that Kuwait, as a leadership, government, and people, has proven that its true strength lies in its national unity and social cohesion. He clarified that culture is not merely an entertainment activity, but a fundamental pillar for building human potential, preserving identity, and strengthening a sense of belonging. He added that the festival’s slogan, “We Return Stronger Through Culture,” embodies the role of culture as a message of hope and a bridge for communication that reinforces values of solidarity and cooperation.
Al-Jassar highlighted the Council’s commitment to presenting a diverse program that combines literature, arts, theater, music, and heritage, along with activities targeted at children, youth, and families. He noted that the festival program includes more than 40 events held across various cultural centers, libraries, and museums throughout the month of August.
The Secretary-General extended his highest expressions of gratitude and appreciation to His Highness the Amir of Kuwait, Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, His Highness the Crown Prince, Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, and His Highness Sheikh Ahmed Abdullah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, Prime Minister, for their wise directives supporting the nation. He also paid tribute with reverence and pride to the people of Kuwait, particularly those on the front lines, including members of the Armed Forces, the Ministry of Interior, the National Guard, medical and health personnel, and all military and civilian entities for their efforts and sacrifices during exceptional circumstances.
The opening ceremony concluded with the musical evening “Samari with Al-Amari,” performed by artist Salman Al-Amari accompanied by “Al-Mass Folk Arts Band.” The evening evoked various colors of Kuwaiti folk musical heritage, underscoring the importance of traditional arts as an authentic part of the cultural memory and national identity, reflecting the society’s history on land and at sea.
