Beautifying the Souls: When the Spirit Shines, the Face Smiles

In an era where screens have become mirrors reflecting fake perfection, many have rushed headlong into the obsession with “superficial beauty” and the endless pursuit of cosmetic trends. We have spent money and effort repairing our outward appearance, forgetting that bodies, no matter how refined by the scalpel, remain dull vessels if devoid of inner radiance. What we truly need today is “psychological and visual beautification”; repairing the self from within, nourishing the eyes with genuine beauty, and refining behaviors and words. For contentment, inner peace, and tolerance are the true scalpel that grants the face a glow that the latest filler and Botox technologies cannot provide. The frantic chase behind liposuction, gastric sleeve surgery, and excessive cosmetic procedures not only drains finances but also carries serious health and psychological risks. Studies have demonstrated a strong link between the gastrointestinal system and the brain (the gut-brain axis); thus, the extreme harshness of gastric sleeve surgery on the stomach directly affects neurotransmitters and mood, potentially leading to depression and emotional volatility, while depriving the body and brain of essential nutrients. This is reflected in the profound Prophetic wisdom when the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “No human being has ever filled a vessel worse than the stomach. It is sufficient for the son of Adam to eat a few morsels to keep his back straight.” Moderation is the foundation of health and psychological stability, and indeed, the stomach is the house of disease and remedy. As the poet Elias Abu Madi clarified, beauty is an internal spring: “O you who complain, what ails you? / How will you fare when you fall ill? / Be beautiful, and you will see the world as beautiful.” Instead of losing health and money on surgeries that alter facial features, make your greatest investment in “beautifying your soul.” A cheerful face and a good spirit exude an ageless charm, and their light instantly reflects on outward appearance. A psychological note: Beautiful features attract attention for a minute, but a beautiful soul inspires love forever. Repair your self-perception and clean the glass of your inner window; for whoever sees the beauty of their soul will never need a surgeon’s scalpel to prove to the world that they are beautiful.
