Measuring the Performance of Entities Using “Sustainability Indicators”

State Minister for Sustainable Development, Dr. Reem Al-Faleh, announced that the Council of Ministers has approved the Government Environmental Sustainability Reporting System initiative, describing the decision as an important national step toward entrenching sustainability in government operations, enhancing governance and transparency, and improving the environmental performance of official entities. In a statement to KUNA, she said the system aims to establish a unified government framework for preparing annual reports that measure the environmental performance of government entities and track their compliance with sustainability indicators. She explained that the system contributes to providing accurate and measurable data, identifying improvement opportunities, enhancing resource-use efficiency, and supporting data-driven decision-making. Al-Faleh added that entrusting the Council of Ministers to her, in her capacity as supervisor of the Public Authority for Environmental Affairs, to coordinate with relevant government entities and monitor efforts related to the system’s work plan reflects the state’s commitment to transforming sustainability into an institutional practice based on measurement, monitoring, and continuous development, thereby ensuring the integration of government efforts and achieving the desired environmental objectives. She noted that the next phase will involve working with relevant entities to determine the mechanisms for preparing reports, monitoring performance indicators, and assessing the implementation status of each entity, paving the way for submitting an annual report to the Council of Ministers detailing the level of compliance, achieved results, key challenges, and recommendations. She emphasized that preparing these reports will help Kuwait fulfill its international climate and environmental commitments and preserve the state’s resources for future generations.
