Suez Canal revenues reach highest level since 2024

Suez Canal revenues rose to $1.26 billion in the second quarter of this year, compared to approximately $1.1 billion in the first quarter, marking a 13% increase amid higher ship transit rates, the highest quarterly revenue level since the first quarter of 2024. According to the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics, canal revenues reached $446 million in June last year, up from $414 million in May, the highest monthly revenue level since January 2024.

The number of ships transiting the canal in the second quarter of 2026 rose to 3,580 vessels, compared to 3,324 in the first quarter, a 7.7% increase, according to Suez Canal Authority data. Net tonnage transited also increased to approximately 169 million tons during the second quarter, up from 142.9 million tons in the first quarter, a 18.3% rise.

The increase in transit rates through the Suez Canal in the second quarter coincided with the outbreak of the Iran war, which disrupted global shipping routes following the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. On an annual basis, ships transiting the Suez Canal in the second quarter of 2026 increased by approximately 16.5%, while tonnage rose by 37.9%.

During the previous fiscal year, 13,100 ships transited the Suez Canal, compared to 12,400, and revenues rose to $4.6 billion from $4 billion, according to data from the Suez Canal Authority and the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics.
