Departure: Between Fate and Choice

Departure is a small word in its letters, yet immense in meaning and heavy in its impact on the heart. It is a transition from one state to another, and from one place to another, but in essence, it is deeper than mere physical movement. It is a shift in emotions, a tremor in relationships, and a change in the faces whose presence we have come to expect in the details of our daily lives. A person may leave by choice or be forced to depart against their will; they may leave physically while their presence remains, or remain physically while their spirit departs. Between these types, untold stories and unseen sorrows take shape, settling deep within the soul and reshaping it in silence.

Departure takes many forms. First, there is the departure without choice, when a person leaves this world to meet their Lord. This is a departure in which no one is consulted, nor can it be delayed by decision; it is divine decree, in the hands of the Almighty alone. It is the most profound type of departure because it carries the weight of eternal loss and leaves a void in the heart that nothing can fill.

Second, there is the departure whose replacement is already present, when someone leaves you for another, as if you were merely a passing stop on their journey, not a fixed destination in their life.

Third, there is the departure of convenience, when some withdraw once their need for you ends. You then realize that the relationship was merely a temporary circumstance, and that affection was tied to an objective rather than to the heart.

Fourth, there is the painfully timed departure, when you need someone you considered a support, only for them to disappear, as if your need for them was the reason for their distance rather than their closeness.

Fifth, there is the departure of self-sufficiency, when some decide to continue their path without you, not because of any fault on your part, but because they have chosen a life in which there is no place for you.

Sixth, there is the departure of awareness, when someone who realizes they have no place in your heart withdraws silently, perhaps with a painful dignity.

All these forms of departure, despite their differing causes, share one common effect: pain. The pain of loss, the pain of change, and the pain of realizing the truth after the fact. Departure is not merely the absence of people; it is a test of our emotions and a mirror that reveals the reality of those around us. From this, we understand that our lives are short, and our encounters are shorter than we think. Between the beginning of acquaintance and the end of parting, days pass quickly, as if they never existed. Therefore, we are in urgent need of leaving a good impression in the hearts of those who knew us, and of being a beautiful memory invoked through prayers rather than pain, through goodness rather than regret.

We need those who remember us for our good after our departure, who pray for us, give charity on our behalf, and recall our noble deeds, rather than those who dwell on our mistakes or remind us of harsh words and bad memories. A kind word endures, a noble act is immortalized, and kindness is never forgotten. Therefore, it is wise to be gentle with those around us, to treat them well as much as we can, and to appreciate their presence before they leave. We must forgive and pardon, for there is nothing in this life worth carrying such a heavy burden of resentment in our hearts.

Make your heart vast, your legacy good, and your words gentle, for you do not know when the final meeting will be, nor when a chapter of your life will be closed without return. In the end, departure remains the way of life, but it is the legacy that immortalizes a person. Be among those who, upon leaving, leave behind sincere prayers, warm memories, and a beautiful imprint that time cannot erase. Bodies depart, but hearts hold onto those they loved for a long time.
