Al-Duwaish: Strengthening the Protection of Workers' Rights
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, represented by the Department of Human Rights Affairs, organized a joint coordination meeting today, Monday, with the Public Authority for Manpower, the Public Prosecution, and in participation with relevant United Nations agencies, to discuss ways to enhance cooperation in the fields of protecting workers’ rights and promoting decent work.
Ambassador Sheikha Jawaher Ibrahim Al-Duwaikh Al-Sabah, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Human Rights Affairs, told the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) that the meeting comes within the framework of Kuwait’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with the United Nations and developing institutional coordination mechanisms among national entities.
She added that the initiative aims to support efforts to enhance the protection of workers’ rights, develop the work environment, combat human trafficking, and build national capacities in line with the State of Kuwait’s international commitments and the Sustainable Development Goals.
She clarified that the meeting reviewed the latest developments in the file of worker protection during the recent period, including the implementation of the National Strategy to Combat Human Trafficking (2025–2028), follow-up on the implementation of Cabinet Decision No. (325) of 2026, and the development of the national referral system and training and awareness programs. It also discussed ways to leverage the technical expertise provided by UN agencies to support these efforts.
She emphasized the importance of continuing coordination among various national entities and strengthening partnerships with international organizations, which contributes to developing policies, enhancing institutional efficiency, and consolidating an approach based on protecting workers’ rights, preventing human trafficking, and reinforcing the rule of law. This reflects the State of Kuwait’s commitment to its international responsibilities and its dedication to adopting best practices in this field.
For her part, Ghada Al-Taher, Representative of the UN Secretary-General and Resident Coordinator in Kuwait, told KUNA in a similar statement that the meeting aims to discuss all areas of joint cooperation, particularly regarding training, qualification, capacity building, trainer training in the field of combating human trafficking, the national referral program, and other files related to the work environment and migrant labor.
She explained that the meeting also comes within the framework of a strategic framework to be signed between UN organizations and the State of Kuwait, which will span four years. These meetings will be part of identifying the priorities, programs, and implementation mechanisms of this framework in the coming years.
Participants reviewed updates on international cooperation, including bilateral memoranda of understanding that Kuwait is working to conclude with several sister and friendly countries in relevant fields. They also discussed prospects for developing training and capacity-building programs, technical support, and enhancing the exchange of expertise between national entities and the UN system.
