Lionel Messi, playing for Inter Miami, has become the first player to win the Major League Soccer Golden Boot award in two consecutive seasons.
The league announced Messi’s Golden Boot triumph on Saturday, the final day of the regular season.
Messi scored 26 goals in 31 matches, the highest tally in the league, followed by Dallas striker Peter Musa with 22 goals, while Nashville’s Sam Surridge netted 21 goals.
Messi scored 29 goals in the previous season, becoming only the second player in league history to score at least 25 goals in two consecutive seasons.
The 39-year-old Argentine star retired from international football earlier this year after a 22-year career with his national team, but in October he extended his contract with Inter Miami through 2028.
The MLS Cup Playoffs begin on November 19.
Inter Miami finished the regular season in second place in the Eastern Conference.
