Indian authorities began evacuating residents from the country’s eastern coastal region on Monday, a day before the expected landfall of a severe cyclonic storm in an area still recovering from a deadly cyclone that struck last week.
Cyclone Morsano is expected to be less intense than Cyclone Arnab, which hit the region last week, killing six people, destroying dozens of homes, and damaging crops.
The India Meteorological Department forecast that Cyclone Morsano would make landfall in the early hours of Tuesday.
Prakar Jain, director of the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority, told Reuters on Monday, “About 2,000 people have been evacuated, and the process is ongoing. We plan to evacuate around 30,000 people.”
The cyclone formed over the Bay of Bengal, a region prone to tropical cyclones that have caused deadly storms along India’s eastern coast.
The meteorological department expects the states of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, on India’s southeastern coast, to bear the brunt of the cyclone’s impacts.
