Twelve migrants died while attempting to cross the Aegean Sea, including six whose bodies were recovered after their boat collided with a Greek police vessel, Greek authorities announced on Monday.
The Hellenic Coast Guard said that among the six victims who died off the island of Lesbos on Monday were an infant and four women.
The Coast Guard added that the other six, comprising five men and one woman, died when a small boat they were aboard capsized off the island of Samos. Fourteen other people were rescued, including an Iranian suspected of organizing the trip.
A Coast Guard official said the incident off Lesbos involved “a speedboat carrying migrants that collided with the port side of a police patrol vessel.” He added that eight people were rescued.
The Aegean Sea is a route frequently used by migrants crossing from Turkey in hopes of reaching Europe. It has seen numerous incidents resulting in fatalities.
In September, one person died and 25 others went missing after a boat overcrowded with migrants sank off the island of Gavdos near Crete.
