France called on the United States on Monday to lift the sanctions it imposed on the International Criminal Court, reiterating its steadfast support for the court and its staff.
The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in a press release that “the role of the International Criminal Court is essential in combating impunity,” affirming France’s condemnation of the U.S. sanctions targeting the court.
The statement clarified that “following the imposition of several sanctions based on the presidential decree issued on February 6, 2025, which affected several judges and staff members, including French judge Nicolas Guillou, the sanctions now encompass the institution itself.”
It added that “France is actively working, in coordination with its European partners and other states party to the Rome Statute under which the International Criminal Court was established, to ensure the court’s ability to continue carrying out its mandate independently and impartially, in pursuit of justice for victims of the most serious crimes.”
The United States imposed additional sanctions on the International Criminal Court last Friday, a move Washington described as an action aimed at defending U.S. sovereignty.
Washington announced the imposition of broad sanctions on the court, which would prohibit financial transactions with it, cut off its resources, and paralyze its operational capacity.
