Minister of Social Affairs: Sign language is a right in communication and a pillar for enhancing social inclusion

Kuwaiti Minister of Social Affairs, Family and Childhood Affairs, Dr. Umthail Al-Hawaili, affirmed on Wednesday that enhancing the use of sign language is a fundamental pillar in empowering persons with disabilities and ensuring their full participation in society.

Speaking to the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) on the occasion of International Sign Language Day, observed annually on September 23, Al-Hawaili stated that sign language is a right to communication and a vital bridge for participation and empowerment, and that it must be present in all aspects of life.

She emphasized the importance of expanding the use of sign language in government entities, institutions, and various services to facilitate barrier-free access to information and services for persons with disabilities.

Al-Hawaili explained that raising community awareness of the importance of sign language and supporting initiatives and programs aimed at promoting its use contribute to consolidating the concepts of social inclusion and equal opportunities.

She noted that the State of Kuwait continues to pay sustained attention to the rights of persons with disabilities, affirming the ongoing efforts of the General Authority for Persons with Disabilities to develop services and enhance coordination with relevant entities to achieve greater empowerment and participation.
