Injuries in shooting outside school in Turkey; suspect detained

Turkish security forces detained the suspect in a shooting incident that occurred on Tuesday outside a high school in the western part of the country, leaving eight people injured, including students, according to the local governor’s office.

NTV reported that police officers and medical teams were deployed in Manisa, near the city of Izmir, following the attack, which took place at approximately 8:00 a.m. local time (5:00 a.m. GMT).

The channel added that one of the injured is in critical condition.

Other media outlets reported that the suspect fired without any apparent motive before fleeing the scene, noting that security measures have been strengthened around the school.

In April, a 14-year-old boy opened fire at a school in Kahramanmaraş Province, killing nine students aged between 10 and 11, as well as a teacher. The attacker died at the scene.

In another incident in Şanlıurfa Province in the southeastern part of the country, a former student opened fire at the high school where he had been studying, before committing suicide in front of police officers. This incident left 16 people injured.

These incidents have sparked widespread anger among Turks.

In April, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced the dismissal of the Deputy Minister of Education and stated that the government would introduce new measures, including restrictions on the possession of firearms.
