A Syrian court sentenced a defense ministry official to 20 years in prison on Thursday for his involvement in the violence that erupted last year in the Sahel region, which left hundreds dead. Meanwhile, it handed down death sentences and life imprisonment to two defendants loyal to the former regime.

Zakaria Bakkar, president of the Military Court of Assizes, announced the death sentence for one of the defendants, convicting him of crimes “of aggression aimed at inciting civil war and sectarian fighting, and of participating in an armed gang intended to confront public security forces, resulting in the deaths of more than two people.”

Another defendant was convicted “of the felony of participating in an armed gang formed with the intent to commit crimes of murder, robbery, and looting,” and was sentenced to “life imprisonment.” Meanwhile, a defense ministry official was convicted “of intentional murder” and sentenced to 20 years in prison, with time spent in pretrial detention credited toward the sentence.
