Nepal flood death toll rises to 903, with 4,247 missing

The death toll from the floods that struck Nepal on the border with China on Wednesday rose to 903 dead and 4,247 missing, according to an announcement by the Nepal Emergency Management Agency on Monday.

Chinese media reported 16 deaths and 546 missing persons in Chinese territory, raising the provisional total number of casualties to 919 dead and 4,793 missing.

Among those missing in Nepal, the number of residents from towns swept away by water on Wednesday has risen, exceeding 2,000 missing persons in just three districts: Nuwakot, Rasuwa, and Makwanpur.

Contact was also lost with 592 foreign nationals and 933 workers at hydropower stations or dam projects in the region in Nepal.

Authorities in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, which borders Nepal, told Agence France-Presse that they had recovered 17 bodies believed to be those of victims of Wednesday’s floods.

Efforts are underway to identify individuals whose names are not included in the official Nepalese casualty figures.
