IAEA: Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine Hit by Drone Attacks

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) announced on Friday that it had been informed of several drone attacks targeting Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant this week, which resulted in injuries to two staff members.

The plant has been a source of ongoing concern regarding its safety since the Russian army took control of it in March 2022. Kyiv and Moscow have been exchanging accusations over attacks on the facility.

The IAEA, responsible for nuclear safety, stated via the X platform that “radiation levels at the site remain within normal limits.”

It noted that an attack occurred on August 25 near the plant’s cooling pond, injuring two workers.

The following day, another drone exploded at the site of the spent nuclear fuel dry storage facility, while reports indicated that a third drone struck the plant’s units’ sprinkler system on August 26.

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi said via X that any attack on nuclear sites is “unacceptable,” reiterating his call for “the utmost restraint to avoid the risk of a nuclear accident.”
