5.0-magnitude earthquake strikes Chinese Tibet

The German Research Centre for Geosciences reported that a magnitude-5 earthquake struck China’s Tibet region on Thursday.

The centre noted that the quake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers in northern Tibet.

The earthquake’s epicentre was located hundreds of miles north of the areas in Nepal and China that were hit by flash floods on Wednesday, killing hundreds and leaving more than 1,000 people missing.

China’s Xinhua News Agency quoted the China Earthquake Networks Centre as saying that a magnitude-4.7 earthquake shook Nagqu in Tibet on Wednesday.

The agency added that China activated a level-four flood response plan in Tibet amid concerns over the collapse of a glacial lake outburst.

It said that China’s Ministry of Water Resources had ordered local authorities to monitor the lake and rainfall levels, and that it had dispatched a team of experts to Qiyong County.
