Liverpool Bolster Damaged Defense by Signing Araujo from Barcelona on Loan

Liverpool, the English Premier League club, announced on Monday that it has signed Uruguayan defender Ronald Araujo from Barcelona, champions of Spain’s top-flight La Liga, on a one-year loan deal in a move aimed at bolstering a defense plagued by numerous injuries.

British media reported that the deal includes an option to buy the 27-year-old for approximately £47 million ($63.48 million).

Araujo’s arrival comes as Liverpool faces growing defensive problems.

Joe Gomez suffered a muscle injury in the club’s opening pre-season match, while young defender Giovanni Leoni is recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

Young defender Jeremy Jagielka is also sidelined with an injury, leaving 35-year-old veteran captain Virgil van Dijk as Liverpool’s only fully fit center-back.

Araujo said in a statement: “I believe this was the ideal step for me at this stage of my career. I think it was a move I needed to make. As soon as I heard about Liverpool’s interest, things moved very quickly.”
