Canadian province declares state of emergency and orders evacuations as wildfires intensify

The municipality of Samara in Canada’s British Columbia province declared a state of emergency early Saturday as a rapidly spreading wildfire swept through the western part of the country, forcing thousands of residents to evacuate their homes.

The “Bald Ridge” fire has grown out of control and spread to approximately 5,000 hectares by Saturday morning, following evacuation orders issued in other regions last week. The British Columbia Wildfire Service stated that the fire started about 15 kilometers west of Samara.

Samara municipality reported power outages today due to the wildfire’s impact and issued a boil-water advisory, noting that untreated water had entered the water supply after the treatment plant was compromised by the wildfire threat.

Samara had a population of approximately 12,000 people in the 2021 census.

Several Canadian provinces, including Ontario and Quebec, have experienced wildfires this year, with hot and dry weather fueling blazes in densely vegetated areas. Canada has received assistance from Mexico, Australia, France, and New Zealand to help contain the fires.

Around 1,500 firefighters have been deployed across British Columbia, where hot and dry conditions increase the risk of new ignitions, and lightning could ignite still-burning fires. The province has issued 39 evacuation orders and 49 evacuation alerts.

Last week, British Columbia Premier David Eby said the province has sufficient resources and is prepared, with support from additional firefighters and aircraft from within and outside the country.

The Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre reported that fires have burned 3.9 million hectares across Canada this year.
