Kuwait City, 8 November (KUNA) – The Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR) announced on Sunday the completion of a research project aimed at developing synthetic polymer fibers from polypropylene and polyethylene to enhance the properties of reinforced concrete, boosting its resistance to impacts and cracking.
In a press release, the institute stated that the project was carried out by the Petroleum Research Center, under the chairmanship of Dr. Salah Al-Anzi, Director of the Petrochemicals and Materials Technology Program, in collaboration with Equate Petrochemical Company and with support from the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS).
The institute clarified that the project’s results led to the development of polymer fibers derived from polypropylene and linear low-density polyethylene (PP/LLDPE) blends, which are suitable for manufacturing and use in concrete. It added that tests demonstrated improved impact resistance of fiber-reinforced concrete, increased durability, and enhanced load-bearing capacity after cracking, with only a limited effect on compressive strength.
The project aims to maximize the added value of locally available polymers by converting them into specialized engineering products that support the national construction and industrial sectors.
The project’s outputs included identifying potential applications for the developed fibers in industrial flooring, pavements, and precast concrete elements, as well as submitting a scientific paper for publication in the peer-reviewed international journal, the Journal of Building Engineering.
The institute emphasized that the project aligns with its efforts to develop innovative scientific and technological solutions, promote the utilization of local materials, and foster collaboration between the research and industrial sectors, thereby supporting sustainable development in the State of Kuwait.
